TWO TO THREE WEEK GUIDELINE
This page outlines what to Do, Avoid and Long Term Care! TDLR available.
Important Note: please remember guidelines vary, as it highly depends on each person’s lifestyle, environment and health
Tattoos are fresh wounds that require significant attention. It is important that you care for it properly to deter any secondary infections or complications. Please avoid web searching concerns as they are rarely accurate.
DO:
Bandage Type:
Bandages are used to keep your wound clean and protected from external bacteria. Plasma, blood, and ink will normally discharge for the first few days along with some swelling.
- Cotton Gauze: leave on overnight or until next day
- Second Skin (Waterproof): leave on for a minimum of 24 hours to a maximum of five days
Bandage Removal:
- Before removing, prepare clean paper towels, bed linens and clothes
- With clean hands, gently peel off the bandage at the end of your lukewarm shower
- With a dollop of unscented soap, ensure all adhesive, plasma, blood, and ink is cleansed thoroughly; do not scrub!
- Dry the wound with the prepared paper towels and apply a thin layer of unscented water-based moisturizer
- Now leave it alone and keep it dry, as your body will do the rest of the healing
- Only wash with soap if absolutely necessary
After Bandage Removal:
- Scabbing Stage: after a couple of days without the bandage, the tattoo should start to scab or flake, this indicates the halfway point
- Itchy: Please try your darn best not to touch or scratch and instead, start lightly moisturizing with clean hands
Winter/Dry Skin?:
Over moisturizing can cause irritation or harbor bacteria so please use your best judgement
Long Term Care:
When healed, your tattoo should be a bit raised and will take time to settle into the skin.
Sun Safety: practice diligently with sunscreen - Regular Maintenance: moisturizing often is optimal for longer lasting tattoos
